Claire Rayner, President,
The Patients' Association,
P.O. BOX 935
Harrow, Middlesex HA1 3YJ 24 February 2000

Dear Claire Rayner,

Thank you for your letter of 21 February. It was good you explained your position clearly; it wasn't boring at all.

I welcomed your openness to the suggestion that it might be wise to think though the implications of direct-to-consumer advertising before taking things further. I also think that the case for a moratorium is underlined by the fact that we are both strongly committed to the same basic objective - much better patient information - yet disagree about the risks of DTCA (and I suspect on the quality of much prescribing too).

I agree that we should now put this correspondence to bed but, if Patients Association does go on to develop a formal policy on DTCA, I do hope Mike Stone will let me have a copy in due course.

Yours sincerely,
Charles Medawar
