From the Secretary of State for Health
POH(1)5510/40
6 January 1998

Dear Mr Medawar

Secretary of State has asked me to thank you for your letter of 2 December and enclosures conveying your concerns that certain antidepressant drugs may cause dependence. Secretary of State has also seen your letters of the same date to the Prime Minister and to the Chief Medical Officer on whose behalf I am similarly replying.

You have raised a number of issues in these letters which concern different aspects of policy and responsibilities both within and outside this Department. Secretary of State will wish to receive detailed advice about these before he considers what action may be appropriate.

Yours sincerely,
FIONA ANDERSON
Private Secretary
