Dear Mr Alder,
Thank you for your letter of 14 July, received by fax today. It was an exquisite example of the genre.
On the substantive issue, I hope to have a response ready for you by the end of this week. In the meantime, I think you should know that I haven't the faintest idea what you mean when you say that my requests for information "raise important questions of operational practice".
If you want me to believe that your letter is something other than a constructive refusal to disclose, please will you let me know, as a matter of urgency, exactly what these "important questions" are?
