Dear Mr Medawar

Paroxetine (Seroxat): Request for information under the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information

I am writing further to Dr Price's letter of 20 November regarding your request under the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information for various information relating to clinical trials on paroxetine (Seroxat).

We have consulted the marketing authorisation holder about your request. As you know, our policy is to make publicly available as much information about medicines as possible. However, on this occasion, I am unable to meet this request on the grounds of exemptions 13 and 14 of Part II of the Code of Practice (third party's commercial confidences and information given in confidence). Our reasons are that disclosure may harm the competitive position of a third party and prejudice the future supply of confidential information, and there is no current risk to public health or safety sufficient to override such interests.

If you have a query about this letter, please contact me. If you are unhappy with our decision, you may ask for it to be reviewed. If you wish to ask for a review, you should write to Dr Keith Jones, Chief Executive, at the above address. After that, if you are still unhappy, you may ask your Member of Parliament to make a complaint on your behalf to the Ombudsman (known officially as the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration) .

Yours sincerely

Dr Susan Wood
Director
Post-Licensing Division
